I just placed an order at the Chick fi A* drive thru, and atypically, had to wait a minute or two. That was just enough time to notice the landscape plantings in the drive through area. The plants caught my eye when I first pulled in, but then I was overwhelmed by purple fountain grass, lantana, verbena, canna, loropetalum, begonia, salvia, mexican petunia, and elephant ears combined with zebra grass, knock out roses, hydrangea and nandina.
It was just a bit much for the small space not to mention my eyeballs. In addition to the multitude of types of plants was the schizophrenic variety in texture and color. This reminds me of going to a place where someone has placed too much artwork on the walls. One needs to rest the eyes on beauty. You know the feeling when you go to Publix, and the cashier asks if you found every thing you needed– you reply- “and then some”!
So as the days cool down and you find yourself “hungry” at your local garden store or upcoming wholesaler sale, think about Chick fil A.
A few tips for fall planning before planting:
- less is more
- limit your color to three
- use texture, but not too much- grasses, shrubs
